Mathematics Classes

Former math class students have made perfect math scores on the PSAT and SAT tests! And former students are National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists!

The 2010 tentative schedule for math classes is available here.

I offer classes in Algebra 1/2, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Advanced Math 1, and Advanced Math 2 (See "Classes Offered" for details on course content).

During each class I teach four lessons. Those lessons are then assigned as written homework, to be completed and corrected by the student, as well as graded by the parent, prior to the next class. Students must show all work, step-by-step, organized algebraically as shown in class. Students should log the time spent for each assignment at the top of the first page. I randomly collect one of the four homework assignments each week and record it. (It should be a "100" since you have already graded and corrected it at home.)

Furthermore, the weekly assignment also includes reading the next four lessons and working the accompanying practice problems. The importance of this part of the assignment cannot be overemphasized. The purpose, of course, is for the student to become familiar with the new material before I teach it and to allow the opportunity to self-teach. This preview is essential! Again all work must be shown step-by-step, organized algebraically. This preview of the new lessons is what really makes learning four lessons in one hour possible. I award Bonus Points for the correctly worked practice problems. "Overs" are allowed on the four Problem Sets and on Practice Problems, but not on tests.

Tests will be assigned beginning the fifth week of class. Tests are taken at home in strict test-taking conditions without the benefit of textbook, notes, or coaching. I apply the accumulated Bonus Points to the test grade as needed for grades of 80% or better. Test scores below 80% warrant a make-up test in addition to corrections. Students whose initial test scores are "100" (without benefit of Bonus Points) are awarded a reduced homework assignment of only three Problem Sets for the following week (instead of four). Students should log the time spent for the test at the top of the page.

We'll be using these editions of the Saxon Math texts: Alg. ½, 3rd; Alg. 1, 3rd; Alg. 2, 2nd or 3rd; Adv. Math, 2nd, Calculus 2nd. Mardels in Fort Worth and Arlington carry these books or you can order online. If you are interested in buying or selling a Saxon Math text, I probably know an interested party. I have the Geometry books which you can rent for $20 for the year.

SUPPLIES: You will need your textbook, paper for assignments, hi-lighter, pencils, graph paper, 3x5 cards, a scientific calculator (for Alg. 2 and Adv. Math), compass, protractor, a spiral notebook for taking notes in class and a notebook binder (all labeled with your name). Organize and save your homework and test papers in the binder.

P.S. Participation in the Summer Plan is essential for maintaining your level of expertise and to further enhance your understanding! The Summer Plan consists of a weekly review using your remaining unworked tests as the source for practice. Work one test (or more if you life) per week, using your text and notes for help as needed. Then check and correct as you work. File the completed, corrected tests in a folder.

When you return to class in September, turn in your folder of tests. As a reward for your diligence, I will record these test problems as bonus points according to a 4:1 ratio. Thus, you will begin the school year with a cache of Bonus Points which, as you know, are used to supplement test grades.

More importantly, you will have moved many math concepts from short term to long term memory. I suggest you start with the last test and work tests in reverse order to focus on the least practiced skills first. Feel free to call me with any questions to clarify this assignment.
